Muriwai
Beach has a
windswept, rugged coastline and 60km of surf
beach backed by rolling sand dunes, making it
one of the most popular west coast beaches of
the Auckland region. Inland, native bush,
picnic areas and walking tracks contras with the
harsh coastline. At certain times the park is
home to gannets, terns and fur seals.
Muriwai Gannet & Tern Colony
has two viewing platforms that provide
unhindered views of the birds. The colony is
growing annually with approximately 1,200 pairs
of adult birds nesting in the summer.
Seals:
Fur seals regularly feed and rest at Oaia Island
1.6km off the coast. During the spring they can
sometimes be seen sun-bathing on the rocks below
the gannet colony.
