Tiritiri Matangi
means in Maori ‘place tossed or moved by wind’ but has
also become known as the singing island. Tiritiri is
situated 30km north east of central Auckland and just 4km
from the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.
Tiri provides a pest free habitat for a number of endangered
species such as Takahe, Stitchbird, and Little Spotted Kiwi.
120 years of farming meant that the island was stipped of
most of its bush. Between 1984 -1994 volunteers planted over
250,000 trees and the island is now 60% forested, the
remaining 40% will be left as grassland.
TiriTiri Matangi
is one of the most successful conservation projects in the
world.
